Detering Pine Marten
2005-04-16 20:33:11
I have been seeing more signs of Pine Marten in the last few months and then
watched one have a go at the hens in the garden at 5pm this evening. I know they are protected but are there any legal means to deter them? Thanks, Dave

That will deter everyone :-( On a more serious note, do you own a dog, let that have the run of the area the hens are in? Jim Webster

No longer are they limited to coniferous woodland being quite happy to travel over open ground to forage and to include habitation within their home territory. It used to be their range was more limited by their preference for good cover and in general being pretty shy of human contact The "rules of engagement" make little sense. If you catch one you are allowed to move it from the place you found it but only a matter of 100 metres. The operating terriotory of a healthy pine marten is anything up to 50 miles. Their incredible homing instincts are renowned. However if they kill livestock then you are allowed to take the ultimate sanction. Occasionally they will live around stock without causing any problems. This is unusual - they are fearsome predators - incredibly strong and able to get through very small spaces. There are places who feed their martens - and encourage them into gardens etc. I have heard of one playing on the roof of a house. Gave the resident cat a complete heart attack when the marten peered in the bedroom window where he was sitting on the window sill inside. Gave the human resident quite a shock too. -- regards Jill Bowis Pure bred utility chickens and ducks Housing; Equipment, Books, Videos, Gifts Herbaceous; Herb and Alpine nursery Working Holidays in Scotland http://www.kintaline.co.uk
