I've been involved in a number of discussions with stirling
enthusiasts recently, their standpoint is that the stirling cycle is
inherently more thermodynamically efficient than either otto or diesel
cycles, so they assume if one could build a stirling that achieved the
same fraction of the theoretical efficiency as has been achieved with
ic engines it would be better. In practice it is limited by materials
available to build it, just like a steam cycle.

Now the real advantages of the stirling seem to be quietness and long
life, this is why they are finally being deployed in small cogen.

account of one installed islanded in a cottage in Derby but cannot lay
