Moving securities to new account - ?
2003-09-09 23:27:49
I've transferred some securities from one investment account to
another. But now when I run an investment performance report, Q lists the removals under Returns, and the additions under Investments. The gain or loss remains the same, but the total numbers under Investments and Returns are much higher than they should be. Any way around this?

This is really annoying, maybe I'm missing something? Here's an example: Suppose you purchased a security for $1,000 a few years ago, and it's now worth $2,000. You run an IP report, shows Beg Mkt Value $1,000, End Mkt Value $2,000. Total investments $1,000, total returns $2,000. You open a new brokerage account and transfer this security to the new account. The IP report now shows: Investments: $1,000 Beg Mkt Value + $2,000 added = $3,000 total Returns: $2,000 End Mkt Value + $2,000 removed = $4,000 total So your net gain is still the same $1,000, but the report's numbers are very misleading. And it obviously gets worse every time you have to transfer the security to a new account. This type of transfer should show up on a transactions report, but it should be a non-event on an IP report.
